I am Nick Cohen — journalist, author and professional troublemaker. For 30 years I've taken on the left, the right, the rich and the pious. No tribe. No masters. Just reporting and argument.

Manifesto in one line

“The job of a writer is to tell the truth and shame the devil.”

Power wants flattery. Readers deserve friction. I write about free speech, corruption, ideology and why good people do nothing.

PORTRAIT No. 04 — INK & ANGER

Not left. Not right. Against the rotten.

Photograph? No. This is better — what three decades of deadlines do to a man.

01 / About — Who the hell is Nick Cohen?

About: the man who annoys everyone equally.

I'm a British journalist and author, columnist for The Observer and The Spectator, contributor to countless papers you have argued with over breakfast. I grew up in Manchester, studied at Oxford, and learned my trade knocking on doors no one wanted opened.

My beat is power — how it lies, how it silences, how it seduces even its critics. I defended the left when it was unfashionable and attacked it when it betrayed its own principles. I did the same to the right. The result: four books, two death threats a year on average, and a loyal readership that disagrees with me at least 40% of the time — as it should.

✒ What I do
Weekly columns, long investigations, book-length polemics, live debates and merciless media criticism.
◉ What I don't do
Press releases, party lines, both-sides cowardice, or praising billionaires for buying newspapers.

02 / Credo — Why I write

Three rules taped above my desk since 1996.

Rule 01

Afflict the comfortable.

Ministers, oligarchs, university censors, newspaper proprietors — if you have power without accountability, expect a phone call. Comfort is not news. Abuse of comfort is.

Rule 02

Comfort the afflicted.

Whistleblowers, exiled writers, censored comedians, sacked workers. My inbox is open to anyone punished for telling the truth. I print what others spike.

Rule 03

Never join the choir — even when you agree with the hymn.

Tribalism kills thought. I left the left's orthodoxy and the right's club for the same reason: freedom is indivisible or it is nothing.

03 / Books — The shelf of trouble

Four books they tried to ignore. You didn't.

From the betrayal of the left to the war on free speech — each book started as a column no editor wanted and ended as a debate no one could avoid.

What's
Left?

2007 • HARPER
Bestseller

How the liberal left abandoned liberalism. Why parts of the left allied with theocratic fascism. Orwell Prize shortlist. Translated into 9 languages.

Read This
Book

2012 • FOURTH ESTATE
Free speech classic

Censorship in an age of offence. From libel bullies to religious blasphemy laws — the new enemies of free expression and how to beat them.

Waiting
for the
Etonians

2009 • FOURTH ESTATE
Reports 2008—2024

Dispatches on Britain's rigged state. Bankers, press barons, politicians — the closed circle that runs Britain and the outsiders fighting back.

04 / Topics — Obsessions

I cover what others avoid.

Free speech

Who can say what?

Blasphemy laws by another name, SLAPPs, campus no-platforming, state secrecy. I defend the right to offend — especially when I hate what's said.

Power & money

Follow the cash.

Oligarchs in London, press ownership, lobbying, the revolving door. Britain is more corrupt than it admits. I name names.

Left / Right

Ideology autopsy.

Why the left embraced authoritarianism and the right embraced victimhood. Tribal psychology meets shoe-leather reporting.

Culture

Books, comedy, theatre.

Reviews with teeth. From Orwell to Armando Iannucci — art matters because tyrants fear jokes more than armies.

05 / Career — Receipts

30 years, zero apologies.

1990 — 1996 • Hammersmith & Independent
Start in local news, door-knocking in the rain. Learn that council minutes hide bigger crimes than parliament.
1996 — 2001 • The Observer
Join as columnist. Cover New Labour's rise. First death threat arrives by fax. Frame it.
2007 • What's Left? explodes
Book accuses parts of the left of betraying Enlightenment values. Denounced and — worse — debated everywhere.
2012 • You Can't Read This Book
Take on libel tourism, religion and censorship. Adopted by free-speech campaigns worldwide.
2016 — 2024 • Spectator, UnHerd, Guardian
Write for anyone who lets me say what I think. Which, surprisingly, is still a few brave editors.
2026 • nickcohen.net relaunched
This site: full archive, weekly dispatch, no paywall barons, no algorithm. Just you and the argument.
06 / Voices — Love & hate mail

Praise that embarrasses me. Hate that proves me right.

“Cohen is the most irritating man in British journalism — because he's so often right.”
— A GRUDGING EDITOR
“If you want to know what Orwell would have blogged, read Cohen on Saturday.”
— A READER SINCE 1998
07 / Latest — Fresh ink
